An enchanting highland village where tradition and breathtaking landscapes converge
The village of Wae Rebo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, is often described as a heaven above the clouds. Nestled at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level, it offers a breathtaking view, often shrouded in a delicate morning fog. Reaching Wae Rebo requires a challenging two to three-hour trek through rugged terrain, but the effort is well worth it. Each November, the villagers celebrate the Penti Traditional Ceremony to give thanks for the year’s harvest, donning traditional attire for the occasion. Interestingly, the residents trace their ancestry back to the Minang people of West Sumatra, brought to Flores by their ancestor Empo Maro. Despite its remote location, Wae Rebo is vibrant and full of life, especially during Indonesia’s Independence Day, when the national flag is proudly displayed atop the traditional houses.
